Research Assistant-University of Texas at Austin September, 2011-Present

Independently stereotaxically inject virus into mouse brains.

Animal husbandry; I take care of breeding the genetic mouse lines our lab uses and everything related to the mice.

Section, mount, and histologically process brain tissue to evaluate a novel selective cell activation assay.

Research Assistant-Neural Systems Engineering Lab (MSU) April, 2011-September, 2011

Sectioned, mounted, and histologically processed brain tissue for plasticity studies of the rat barrel cortex.

Observed neurosurgeries aimed at chronically implanting microelectrode arrays in the rat prefrontal cortex and performed craniotomies, as well as assisted in other aspects of the procedure.

Trained rats in a working memory task for study investigating electrical signals in the PFC.

Lab in Behavioral Neuroscience (MSU) August, 2010-December 2010

Conducted 4 experiments throughout the course: Retrograde tracing of the facial nerve (CN VII) using HRP; Sex differences in the rat SDN-POA; Dose-dependent effects of diazepam on anxiety behavior in rats; and Effects of ovarian hormones in the hypothalamus.

Learned the principles of responsible conduct of research with animals and many lab techniques, including: drug injections, perfusions in rats, microtome slicing of brain tissue, immunohistochemical processing of brain slices, microscopic analysis, and HRP retrograde tracing. Additionally, we conducted statistical analysis of the data (i.e., ANOVA, t-tests).

Acquired funding, designed a study, obtained IRB approval, conducted the study with both client and consultant participants, developed a questionnaire, collected and analyzed the data.

Presented the results at three conferences, published in RECUR (Red Cedar Undergraduate Research Journal) and revising for The Writing Center Journal.

Determined the crucial characteristics that define effective poster presentations across all academic disciplines.

Conducted original research by interviewing professors from various fields and analyzing published poster presentation guidelines for comparison purposes.

Taught Comparative Animal Physiology at the University of Texas at Austin, Spring 2012.

Throughout college, I privately tutored students taking a diverse set of advanced courses, including psychology, anatomy, physiology, and cellular and molecular biology.

Worked as a writing consultant at the MSU Writing Center for four years.
